TOP 10 TOKYO SHOPS AS SEEN IN THE GUARDIAN UK NEWSPAPER.

Tokyo Fashion Diaries 23 Feb 2012, 1:18 am CET

candy in shibuya

I am currently in Italy…Florence to be exact, but before talking of Italian sunsets, let’s travel to the UK for a minute….

The yen is high, travel is down, and Japan is not the only game changer in Asia anymore…what is a consumer-oriented city like Tokyo to do?

This post is for all of the Tokyo friends local and abroad who know what really makes this city tick, and why it ALWAYS pulls you back; the SHOPPING! You seriously cannot leave without a bag full of stuff. And no matter what you buy…whether it be a 100 yen cat-ear headband or a used leather jacket with Engrish written in neon markers “Fuk the Duk”, proclaiming “I got this in Tokyo” is always a bragging right (brag to the hills, my friends…Tokyoites have no qualms).

So when the UKs premier newspaper The Guardian asked me to list my top favorite fun Tokyo shops, I was extremely obliged. I think that in any other city, a writer would get so very b-o-r-e-d writing as many “best shops” lists as I do (so…many…..+_+) but I find that no matter what, there are always new shops I get to switch in to my lists every time… the landscape here changes constantly! I want to thank Susie of Style Bubble for recommending me for the article, and she is the perfect postergirl for the above adage; she had to apologize to her readers for the barrage of posts on clothes she had bought in Tokyo on her first trip here last year.

It is a list for travelers who are thinking of coming to Tokyo and I hope I have captured the spirit of the city. It is so very important to get as many travelers into the country as possible! I have to apologize to my foreign friends that the yen is so high now T_T…please try to make it if you can, anyway. (On the flip side they say “But you can travel because it’s so cheap for you!! But that’s only if your commission fees haven’t been cut in half since the economy crashed…so not much traveling gets done anyway…it’s a vicious cycle!).

If you can read in English (hi!) then I suggest traveling right over to The Guardian article to read it through.

Candy (above)

“Street Clothes the Street Itself Isn’t Cool Enough To Wear”

faline tokyo

Faline “Where “It” people come to take a load off. And get dressed for that night’s party.”

Harcoza

Harcoza “Stevia. It’s probably safe. And it’s sooooo sweet”

aquvii tokyo

Aquvii

“Fork earrings. And a brand called “Yoruko Banzai”. You need know nothing else.”

WC shibuya

WC

The animatronic stuffed bear on a swing is hypnotizing. You’ll suddenly find yourself inside, buying more things than you need.

bubbles

Bubbles Used 70s and 80s clothes sold by the cutest girl Coi. Girlfriend is owner and she’s kicking ass and taking names.

xanadu

Xanadu Sleek, chic clothes in Harajuku. Kind of a paradox! I’m fearing a black hole might form here someday…

spank

Spank! This is not porn, this is fashion. There is a sister branch in Shibuya called “Spank Me!”. This is not po-*cough*

Spank!

kitakore

Kitakore Disneyland for street fashion fans

contemporary fix aoyama

Contemporary Fix Well, it’s too cool for you. And me.

thrills and frills 22 Feb 2012, 11:29 pm CET

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket some pictures i took on my crappy phone camera because i was too lazy to carry my proper camera to Fashion Week this year, im such a bad blogger sometimes lol. oh well, it was a wonderful weekend where i got to oogle at beautiful clothes and draw up mental wishlists, had the chance to meet up with friends, to sit in the brief moments of sun with my sunglasses on and cuckle at the poor saps who hung around Somerset House waiting to be 'papped'. i uploaded the rest of my 'amazingly professional' pictures on the blogs Facebook page which you can take a gander at over here :)

Clear your mind. Breath deeply. Look closely and carefully at this image. You know have the overwhelming urge to line up for the Marni x H&M launch to buy me this combo. You will do it without question. You will send said pieces in the mail to me, since we don't have an H&M here. I may or may not pay you back. Thank you. That is all.
In all seriousness, how incredible is the Marni x H&M collection?! I think it's the first H&M collaboration I have seen in years where real attention is paid to the menswear line. Any of the pieces could easily be in the mainline, with the same attention to detail and quality. I'm especially in love with the swim shorts + button down combo (get a better look over at The Dandy Project). Here's hoping my lucky stars align and I somehow get my hands on them. Time for H&M to open in Winnipeg!

Albera Ferretti Fall 2012 | Milan Fashion Week

Fashion Gone Rogue: The Latest in Editorials and Campaigns 22 Feb 2012, 10:46 pm CET

Ferretti’s Seductive GlamourAlberta Ferretti’s fall 2012 collection followed in the vein of spring with seductive silhouettes featuring peekaboo cut-outs. Ferretti offered some new elements though, showcasing tailored suiting and outerwear with a masculine overtone which contrasted with her signature gowns. A color palette steeped in black, deep purple, royal blue and crimson red dominated the new season. A touch of glittering sequins and woven leather brought a new twist to classic silhouettes. The show closed with an ethereal white gown worn by model Marte Mei Van Haaster which stuck a balance between soft and hard elements perfectly.

A collection we’re always looking forward to seeing is Acne! The AW12 show was amazing and there are so many styles that are already on our wish lists. We loved the pastels, the tight leather skirts and the quilted material. After the show the backstage area was transformed into one big afterparty and we had a great evening.

Gucci Fall 2012 | Milan Fashion Week

Fashion Gone Rogue: The Latest in Editorials and Campaigns 22 Feb 2012, 7:48 pm CET

Gucci’s Gothic Fall – For fall 2012, Gucci creative director Frida Giannini presented a darkly decadent collection of billowing gowns, relaxed suiting and lush coats for the first day of Milan Fashion Week. Slinky and sensuous silhouettes dominated the runway in moody hues of inky black, dark emerald, plum, burgundy and sapphire blue. Chiffon gowns brought a romantic touch to the dark palette. Luxurious materials of feathers, crushed velvet and leather also made an appearance. For the finale, Giannini sent out sheer dresses embellished with sparkling leaf shapes–a testament to the strong yet feminine spirit of autumn.

Knit Witting

Style Bubble 22 Feb 2012, 7:39 pm CET

Going onboard what felt like a party bus from Shoreditch to London Fashion Week helmed by PR legend Mandi Lennard, was exactly the Welcome Back to London jolt that I needed.  Our destination?  First up, BFC's Rock Vault where the best of London's directional fine jewellery designer was showcased. Then on to Sister by Sibling's first proper presentation in the Portico Rooms.  Sister by Sibling is into its second season and the autumn winter season definitely gave the knitwear label a far more surer footing.  This trio of Joe Bates, Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery weren't afraid to remix previous motifs from their menswear offering and kapowow us with loud-as-you-can-shout colour combinations.

Katie Grand's more-is-more styling helped to amplify what Sibling is all about which is the idea of maintaining classic knitwear shapes but applying the most unlikely patterns to them.  A twin set, nay a tri-set of cardigan, crewneck and vest in highlighter orange leopard print and electric pink and blue Fair Isle would please both the zany granny and the out there club kid as well as a lot of people in between who might take one piece or two.  A knitted faux fur fox stole is another witty knit touch that makes Sibling all the more lovable.  What really hit the spot for me were the sequinned knit jumper and skirts as well as the pom pom adorned skull face, another way of subverting this oft-used badge of rebellion.  Lurex, angora and mohair knits in a similar palette are the more simple foundations of this collection but I think they really need to have the leopard jostling alongside them in order to be a true Sister by Sibling soldier, which is exactly who I wanted to be after seeing the presentation.

A collaboration with Underground, who have done a few shoe collabs this season, means that we get to wear Sibling's Fair Isle knit on pointy creepers as well as an orange leopard print chelsea boots, both likely to go into production.

A less likely collaboration sees Sibling giving Barbie six of their key looks from the collection and frankly, she's never looked cooler.
